Full
day trip to Symi island
by catamaran ferry Our excursion start from Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes
Town by the ferry. The ferry sails from here to the beautiful island of
Symi, where the first stop is Panormitis monastery in the south. The
monastery is a place of pilgrimage for sailors worldwide, famous for its
icon of the Archangel Michael, Symi's patron saint and guardian of
seafarers. According to tradition, if you ask a favour of St Michael, you
must vow to give something in return. As a result, the interior of the
monastery is a dazzling array of votive offerings or tamata, from pilgrims.
Its white buildings line the edge of the horseshoe-shaped harbour where
you will also find an old bakery offering all sorts of delicacies.
The
ferry then sails on down the coast of the island to dock at the harbour in
Symi Town. The harbour area, Gialos, is one of the most beautiful in
Greece, surrounded by Neo-Classical houses and elaborate churches built on
the hillside. Ever since classical times Symi has thrived on the success
of its sponge-diving fleet and boat-building industry, which once launched
500 ships a year. We visit a sponge centre where you have the opportunity
to learn about the processes involved in harvesting and preparing the
sponges as well as the chance to shop for the sponges for which the island
is famous. We will also visit a gold store where pieces based on
traditional Greek motifs are produced alongside contemporary designs. You
will then have plenty of time to explore this fascinating town on your own.
Whilst
on Symi you may choose to visit the maritime museum, an interesting record
of Symi's seafaring past. The upper town, Chorio, is linked to Gialos by a
road and also by 375 marble steps. Chorio comprises a maze of lanes and
distinctive houses often with traditional interiors, as well as a 19th
century church with an impressive pebble mosaic. The Symi museum houses a
collection of costumes and traditional items. Beyond the museum is the
ruined Byzantine kastro and medieval walls, together with the Megali
Panagia church which is home to an important 16th century icon.
There
is a small shingle beach beyond the harbour for those wishing to swim
during their visit.

Full
day trip to Turkey by
hydrofoil Our excursion start at the commercial harbour in Rhodes Town.
Your excursion voucher will be exchanged for a boarding card before you
board the hydrofoil. The hydrofoil journey to the bustling Turkish port of
Marmaris will take around 45 minutes. Please note that this excursion is
not escorted outside Rhodes so you will need to pay attention to certain
things. At some point, you will be required to pay the Greek and Turkish
port taxes to a representative. There are toilets and refreshments on
board the hydrofoil. Seating is aircraft style with plenty of room and
there are areas where you may take some fresh air and walk around. There
will be a notice on the hydrofoil on the outward journey informing you of
the time you need to be back on board for the return journey to Rhodes.
Please take note of this and do not be late - the hydrofoil will not wait
for you!
As
you disembark, things can seem a little chaotic and confusing! You will be
required to show your passport to Turkish immigration officers but nothing
else. It is highly likely that people will attempt to get you to join
their coaches or buses, offering you a free city tour. We strongly advise
against doing so.
Once
the hydrofoil has docked in Marmaris it is around a 10-15 minute stroll
from the port to the bazaar and shopping area, which are very easy to find.
Alternatively a taxi will cost in the region of £4 - £5.
Once
you are shopping in the bazaar, don't forget to haggle - it is expected of
you. Great bargains can be had in leather goods, gold and carpets and
there are many "designer" items (which are of course copies) at
good prices. If you fancy something other than shopping, there is an
impressive castle museum to be viewed, Turkish baths to be enjoyed and a
nearby beach where you may relax. There are plenty of restaurants where
you can sample Turkish cuisine and for those who are too busy shopping to
stop for lunch, there are snack bars where you can buy baked pastries and
kebabs and wash them down with apple tea or Turkish coffee.
Please
note that credit cards and most currencies are accepted in Marmaris - it
is not necessary to exchange any money for Turkish Lire and if you do so,
you will not be able to change this back into Euros on Rhodes.
After
joining the hydrofoil for the return journey, remember that you may be
required to show your purchases to Greek customs officers on your return
to Rhodes. Once you have passed through customs in Rhodes harbour, our
escort will take you back to ou
